There’s an old joke that after 10,000 hours you become an expert – well, try 60,000+ hours across thirty-some years. With time and experience, design thinking becomes second nature. I can walk into a raw space or review an architect’s plans and intuitively sense how technology should flow with the lines of the room. This instinct wasn’t born overnight; it’s been cultivated through countless projects, challenges, and lessons learned. Early in my career I was more focused on the gear and specs, but as I matured, I realized that understanding proportion, sightlines, and materials is just as critical as understanding wiring diagrams. Now, my technical proposals often start with questions like, “How will this feel in the space? Does it preserve the designer’s intent?” That sensitivity comes from years of close observation and yes, a few mistakes that taught me what not to do. Today, my design intuition means I can often preempt conflicts before they happen. I’ll foresee that a planned speaker location might clash with a chandelier, or that a certain wall keypad would be better placed (or perhaps better concealed) elsewhere. This intuitive foresight is one reason clients trust me with their most precious environments. Decades of integration work have given me a keen sense of how to meld technology with a home’s design and décor, to the point where I often instinctively know the right approach long before we break ground.
